BILL HUIZENGA – the Republican Candidate in Michigan’s newly-created 4th Congressional District

The Company He Keeps

It is said that you can judge a person by the company they keep. This is certainly true in the case of the current U.S. Representative for Michigan’s 2nd Congressional District. On the official campaign website for his 2022 run to represent the newly-created 4th District, Bill Huizenga proudly showcases a rogues’ gallery of organizations that have endorsed him, including these:

National Rifle Association: In addition to garnering the NRA’s endorsement, this group’s Political Victory Fund gave Representative Huizenga a solid “A Rating”—citing his opposition to banning semi-automatic weapons as well as his opposition to any sort of universal background check system. Much to the NRA’s delight, Huizenga voted for the National Concealed Carry Reciprocity Bill that was heralded in Breitbart as “the greatest gun rights boost since ratification of the 2nd Amendment.”

Right to Life of Michigan: At the time of writing, America is anticipating a SCOTUS decision that will overturn Roe v. Wade. When this happens, as noted on the group’s website, the Michigan law banning abortion in nearly all situations would have an opportunity to go into effect.

Family Research Council Action PAC: Bill Huizenga has also earned that rare distinction of being just one of 58 members of Congress who scored a perfect 100% from this anti-abortion group for votes cast in both 2020 and 2021! The Council touts itself as “a nonprofit research and educational organization dedicated to articulating and advancing a family-centered philosophy of public life,” but in fact it is designated by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a Hate Group with a specialty of “defaming LGBTQ people.”

Votes Speak Louder Than Words

To paraphrase that well-known proverb: “A person is judged by their votes, and not by their words” (Hello, Brett Kavanaugh). Well, let the roll call show that Bill Huizenga is not a friend to seniors, women, workers, dreamers, the environment, or members of the LGBTQ community!

The AFL-CIO 2021 Scorecard condemns Representative Huizenga with a score of 5%. He couldn’t even match the average House Republican score of 6%! Getting him to the bottom of the list were his recent votes against the Build Back Better Act, Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, Older Workers Discrimination Act, and Violence Against Women Act.

The League of Conservation Voters gives Mr. Huizenga a lifetime score of just 7%, citing his many anti-Earth votes on a range of legislative issues including climate change, clean energy, water, oceans, wildlife and public lands & forests.

Looking at the Human Rights Campaign Fund Congressional Scorecard, Representative Huizenga is one of the select few to have laid 3 goose eggs, earning an abysmal 0% score for the three most recent sessions of Congress. Indeed, he voted against every piece of human rights legislation monitored by the HRC during the 116th session including the Equality Act, American Dream and Promise Act, International Human Rights Defense Act and Every Child Deserves a Family Act.
