2020 KCDP endorsee – Jeff Getting

A life-long west Michigan resident, Jeff Getting completed dual degrees in Criminal Justice and Sociology at WMU, and earned his law degree at Indiana University.  He has practiced law in Kalamazoo County for 30 years, and served as Assistant Prosecutor from 1990 to 1998, successfully prosecuted thousands of cases, including several homicides, drug cases and sex crimes.  Jeff was elected Prosecuting Attorney in 2012.

In addition to working with local law enforcement and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for West Michigan to identify, prosecute and incarcerate Kalamazoo County’s most dangerous criminals, he has also supported vital alternatives like Drug Court, Mental Health Court and Family Dependency Treatment Court for nonviolent offenders with addiction and mental health issues. He has supported the Kalamazoo Probation Enhancement Program’s (KPEP) Walnut & Park Coffee Shop and Washington Square Diner for offenders reintegrating into society. He has advocated to Raise the Age for 17-year olds being charged as adults.  Jeff has pushed for the creation of the nation’s first trauma-specific program for trauma survivors and children in the criminal justice system.

Jeff serves on the Board of Directors for the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan, and on their Legislative Committee, and Best Practices Initiative. He is also a member of Prevention Works’ Board of Directors, the Kalamazoo County Elder Abuse Prevention Coalition, and the KPEP Board of Directors.  He has previously served on the Board of Directors for Guardian Advocacy and Finance Services, the Kalamazoo County Bar Association, the State Bar of Michigan’s Attorney Discipline Board Hearing Panel, and as a coach for West Portage Little League. He is a member of the Kiwanis Club.
