Veteran Democratic lawmaker Ed LaForge dies

Ed LaForge, a Democrat who served in the Michigan House of Representatives and on the Kalamazoo City Commission, has died, his former House and Commission colleague, Sean McCann, reports.

“He was a very early and powerful influence on me and many others,” Sean says. “A true character, one of a kind, gruff and gentle, fierce and loving, a champion for the least among us, his loss is great.”

Kalamazoo County Democratic Party Chairman Jake Andrews says LaForge was a “role model” for Democrats and calls for a rededication to the principles he represented:

“I had the pleasure of meeting with former Rep. Ed LaForge on a few occasions. While I envy those who had the opportunity to know him better, I could tell from our short conversations he was a true champion for the people of Kalamazoo. He understood the power of his words, but knew action was necessary to make a real difference,” he says. “He is a true role model for us who share his passion to leave the world a better place. He is a shining example of what it means to be a great Democrat, but more importantly, what it means to be a great person. Let us dedicate our upcoming work to elect Democrats in November to his memory. Let us work tirelessly everyday, because that is what Representative LaForge would want, and expect. I look forward to working alongside Kalamazoo Democrats in continuing his storied legacy. The thoughts of everyone at the Kalamazoo County Democratic Party are with his family and friends.”
