Statement Regarding Endorsements of City of Kalamazoo Commission Candidates

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE. On September 21, 2017, the Kalamazoo County Democratic Party (KCDP) voted to endorse Erin Knott and Eric Cunningham in the Kalamazoo City Commission races. Knott is seeking re-election after serving her first term on the Kalamazoo City Commission. Knott is a Democrat and a member of the KCDP. She has spent over a decade as a champion for democratic or progressive policies at the local, State and federal levels. Knott shared her passion for continuing her work on the Kalamazoo City Commission, especially ensuring that the work of the Foundation for Excellence is transparent and documentation is made available to the public.

Cunningham is also seeking re-election to the City Commission. Cunningham was appointed to the Kalamazoo City Commission in early 2015 and narrowly lost the 2015 election. Cunningham is also a Democrat and a member of the KCDP. As a life-long resident of Kalamazoo, Cunningham expressed passion to work on initiatives to address poverty in the city.. Cunningham shared that he believed that the aspirational work resulting from the Foundation for Excellence was a way to continue to boost the city’s efforts in working on this problem. He also shared that there needs to be transparency in the implementation process and engagement with the community.
